Leaving comments and submitting your site to directories are most common ways to gain backlinks manually.
I say manually, because real good websites will gain organic backlinks without doing any of these, people will cite their articles. But for beginners like me, that is still a long term goal.
So, I will compare these two methods with my experience as a beginner.
First, some of the advantages of leaving comments are already discussed in my previous post. But comparing to submitting directories, there are other benefits:
Backlinks from comments are more possible to bring you organic traffic than directories. I don't think a lot of people will go to directories to find the website they interested in, and visit. In my opinion, they are just another form of link farms. But if you comments are interesting, it is possible that people will visit your website when they read them.
Leaving comments build links faster than directories. It takes weeks to months to get approved by directories, while you get instant backlinks from most blogs by leaving comments.
It's less boring... You know that...
But submitting to directories also has benefits:
It could be one time effort. You can spend a day or two, five or more hours a day, to submit thousands of directories, and then sit back to wait for the backlinks. Of course, if only you can bear the bore...
It requires no skill at all. It requires knowledge from different areas to understand posts from different blogs before you can leave a comment (you don't want to spam around).
So what I did was, spent a day or two submitting to hundreds (I couldn't do thousands) of directories, then keep it a routine to leave comments everyday.
That's the best way, isn't it?

Leaving comment vs. submitting directory

Some directories are better than others. There are some really good blog directories, one in particular that I get some traffic from, as I posted my blog in the right category. Some website directories aren't all that hot, though. I did a reciprocal link with two a couple of months ago, and they didn't even have me listed in their directory, so I removed their link from my site.
I came to this post and had the sole intention to write a comment just for the backlink. LOL
Good thing I like to comment. My problem with entrecard is there are so many great blogs I've come across that I want to read so many. How do people just "drop" on so many of these great sites? I don't see them leaving comments.
I came to your blog thru Digg and I'm really impressed by its design. How I wish I could style by blogger blog like you have done.
Congrats
we get backlink from leaving comment only for bijtydo follow blog.
i did the same , submitted to as many dir as i could and comments on what i see worth typing for ;)
Very good article. This is becoming the age-old way to gain backlinks. Of course, there are plenty of shortcuts that may or may not get you banned by Google, but these are the two solid ways to do it.
And its sad because all you are doing is like growing crops. You have to work hard planting, tilling, weeding, feeding and nurturing your crop if you plan on getting any kind of result. Commenting and submitting directories is exactly like that.
In the long run, its helpful, but short term, it can be a real chore.
Thanks for reminding me of that!
@ria:
Yes, I believe that there are good directories. But since I just submitted to them recently, and didn't get approved for most of them, I don't know which are good. I appreciate if you can suggest some good directories here.
@mark wilson:
Alright, you said that means you read my post, I welcome every readers to leave a comment on my blog! Thank you! Enjoy the backlink! (though I have to admit the backlink from my blog is not so valuable at this time, hope it will be more valuable in the near future.)
@Grandy:
It is a sad reality that most Entrecarders just care about the "stats" Entrecard gives them... Maybe it will change soon.
@The guest from Digg.com:
What a big surprise! I just submitted my site several minutes before your comment! I don't know how to thank you for that! I will be happy for the week for your compliment. Actually there are a lot of blogs about how to design a good blogger blog, such as www.bloggerbuster.com. I still have a lot to learn...
@lagi capek baru pulang:
Interesting name, wish I can understand it one day.
I agree that you can only get backlinks from do follow blogs. That's why I am trying to collect more do follow blogs to comment on. See my previous post http://getyourfreecash.blogspot.com/2008/04/my-everyday-comment-list.html
@ameo,
Good, I now confirm that I am in the right direction. Thanks.
@the judge:
Yes, I truly understand the feeling of growing backlinks. But it is really sweet when harvesting your effort. Cheers!
BlogRate Directory is good. I submitted my blog 10 days ago, and I've already received a link, and I even get traffic from them.
Zimbio is good. Its not a directory, its like you submit your blog, post your articles (hopefully they're good ones)in the right wikizines, and you'll immediately get that link, just keep checking your google stats.
They will also ping your blog, and you can get traffic from them. I get a little, not a lot, but getting that link is more important.
In the beginning, I used them a lot for just about every single article I posted in my blog, but then I started to get pissed off because they rate your articles on a scale of 1-5 stars.
Most of my articles got a 3 star rating and 2 of my articles got 1 star while I saw some tech articles getting 5 stars!
For example, I posted my movie review of Hostel 1, and they gave me 3 stars. Then, I posted my movie review of Hostel 2, and they gave me 1 star! What's with that? My writing style was the same, but just because I liked hostel 2 and they didn't, they give it 1 star?
Yes, I know I should just shut up, take the links and run, but I hate unfairness. I still post some of my articles, but not all of them, and I still highly recommend them, especially if you're a new blogger, and you need those links.
I apologize, I didn't put my name in there, its Ria, and I wrote that comment right above this one about Zimbio!
Good to see your comment Ria! I know your writing style, I will give you 5 stars for your excellent writing. I check out Zimbio, looks nice.
BTW, I rated some of your articles there.:)
Okay everyone, I just want you to witness Zimbio in action. A couple of days ago, I posted an article on my blog about Charlton Heston. Zimbio pinged my blog, pulled that article, and posted it into one of their wikizines. The result? As of this moment, I am on page 5 of google under Charlton Heston's greatest movies, so go take a look! Hurry up before I get slapped to page 1 trillion, and you won't find the article at all unless you go to my site!
sign up with Zimbio right away!
I signed up several days ago. I don't know why, but the website cannot find all of my posts, only like 20 posts are extracted.
Hi Eric, if Zimbio isn't pulling all of your blog posts, its because you're EVIL, EVIL, EVIL! You know I'm joking, right? Zimbio isn't pulling all of your posts, because they can't find a wikizine to put it in, which means you need to create one yourself.
I don't bother with it anymore, since I have this love/hate relationship going on with them, but its pretty easy to do, whatever the main topic of your post, is what you should name the wikizine. Keep up the good work!
I tried your method, it still doesn't work, my earliest posts are still not in the queue, no matter how I ping my blog... Maybe I am EVIL!
This is a good post. I definitely think there are directories that are worth your time, but as you said, commenting in blogs is the quickest way to get backlinks. However, ideally you'd want search engine spiders to be able to get to your site through your comments, and most blogs have nofollow tags on outgoing links in comments.
Good article. Both directories and commenting are important. And as others were saying, Zimbio might be useful too.
